U.P.R.I.S.I.N.G. case report

Simon posted on the U.P.R.I.S.I.N.G Facebook group, stating that he had had a strange sighting back in the 90s. I contacted him and asked if we could discuss this sighting in more detail and he agreed to me writing up this case report and investigating his sighting.
Sighting details;
I asked Simon a few questions and asked him to describe what happened in as much detail as possible. This is his story, in his own words:
“So I was at my childhood home, Surrey Avenue (Leigh-On-Sea, Essex) it was a clear night between 9 pm and 11 pm in the summer. It was the early to mid-1990s. I was chilling in the south-facing back garden with an old schoolmate (Martin Tippet) looking up at the stars, talking rubbish. Then all of a sudden a ‘UFO’ appeared over our house at what seemed about 1000ft, heading in a steady direction from N/E to S/W.
It was visible for about three seconds as it carried on past our big tree at the end of the garden. We only observed the bottom of the craft. It looked like three triangles in a triangle formation, one triangle at the front, the other two at the back. it was such a tight formation I got the impression it was one craft. There was no sound, not even air turbulence sounds and the colour seemed dark grey and it blended in well with the dark sky. There were no lights and it wasn’t travelling much faster than the commonly seen Cessna 152 planes, which have a cruise speed of 123mph.
It was a level 180 degrees angle. If we weren’t looking up at the time we wouldn’t have even noticed it going over, Once it had passed out of sight, we looked at each other which confirmed we weren’t seeing things, then felt the need to get indoors and inform my mother.”
Simon informed me that he is no longer in touch with Martin, and so couldn’t pass on any contact details. He also mentioned that a while after his sighting, he saw a report from an airline pilot claiming to have seen the same thing while in the air, also drawing a sketch of what he saw. Unfortunately, despite looking numerous times over the years since, he has been unable to find the report again.

While investigating this sighting, I came across a very similar sighting in nearby Basildon. This sighting was reported to MUFON. The report reads:
“One winters evening, with clear sky and nice bright stars. I had just finished watching tv and went to my garden, to take out the rubbish for the following day. I have no idea what made me look in that direction, but I noticed a large black triangular craft, making hardly any noise. it was blacker than the night sky and had defined edges. I observed the craft for about a minute as it was only at a high of a few hundred feet and was moving very slowly. when it was right above me, the strangest thought went through my mind “it’s only birds” which only long after the event makes no sense at all. it wasn’t a giant, silent, triangular bird and that’s for sure. it was a solid object and was real! another strange thing was, I didn’t get a camera or go to the front of the house, or get anyone else to come and have a further look. I am not saying it was from space, but man we really don’t know what’s going on, even in our own backyards. I have never seen anything else like this in all these years and really hope I never will again. I am not going to remain anonymous about this sighting, I know what I saw and it is only long after the event, it became clear.”
It was claimed that this object was seen at a distance of 101-500 feet and at an altitude of 500 feet or less. This sighting sounds very similar to simons sighting, and it matches the approximate year and general description. Some of the details were different, and the other witness claims it was winter when Simon’s sighting was in the summer. I will forward Simon’s case report to MUFON anyway and see if they agree that they may have seen the same object.
